Women on Carrier's Crew Find Navy Life Rewarding
The U.S. Defense Department recently announced it intends to open 14,000 more military job opportunities to women. But in an environment that has traditionally been male-dominated, what incentives could make more women want to join the military? VOA's Guita Aryan spent a few days on the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Abraham Lincoln and talked to some of the women on board about why they joined the Navy.

Can US Navy Sailors BE INTIMATE Aboard A Nuclear Aircraft Carrier?
Can US Navy Sailors Be Intimate Aboard A Nuclear Aircraft Carrier?
The US Navy aircraft carrier is a floating city, a self-contained world where sailors live, work, and fight. The ship is home to thousands of sailors, all of whom have one goal in mind: to complete their mission and return home safely. But when more than 5,000 sailors live on an aircraft carrier, where do they sleep? How do they experience intimate moments with so many crew members on board?
The cramped bedrooms of thousands of US Navy sailors aboard an aircraft carrier may not seem like an exciting topic, but they are a testament to the dedication and sacrifice of the men and women who serve our country. These sailors live in incredibly close quarters, with bunk beds stacked on top of each other and hardly any room to ...

TRANSCRIPT:
JORDAN PETERSON: What's the relative importance of career and motherhood in a typical woman's life? I'm 55 and I've been working with men and women my entire life. And I've watched this. And it's quite obvious. It's like at 19 it's all career. By 30 that's just not the case. It's not the case. I don't know if I've seen a single woman who I didn't think had a psychological problem who hadn't seriously flipped in their attitude towards the balance of family and career by the time they were 30. And then you see lots of women who at 40 haven't had kids and perhaps wanted to and that's not a pleasant situation.
I was talking to a woman who was about 39, a professional woman – attractive, well put together, competent, well educated, successful in her profession, unmarried, in a relationship with an older guy but unmarried and desperate to have a child. She said no one ever talked to her about the fact that she's actually want to have a family or encouraged her to think about doing that. It was as if it wasn't within the realm of possibility that one of the things that she might have the ambition to do would be to be a mother. And that's just not acceptable.
And it was like she woke up in her late thirties and thought well, the first thing she thought was this profession of mine is actually nowhere near as comprehensively fulfilling as the advertisements claimed which is something that virtually everyone discovers as they move forward in their professional career. No, I mean the reason you get paid generally for your work is because you're doing something that you wouldn't choose to do if you weren't being paid for it. And so the idea that your career is going to be the fundamental source of your fulfillment is true for a very tiny minority of people. And even with them it's complicated. So she was tearful and upset about the fact that it took her so long to discover that there were other important dimensions to life and that motherhood turns out to be well, how many things do you do in your life that are fundamental, right? You have a career and your education so that would be part of your career development. That's part of what makes you generally useful in society and perhaps a place that you find some meaning and purpose. You have your friends. You have your family like your parents and your siblings and so forth. You have your kids. You have your relationship. That's it. There's four things. Now you can expand that to some degree. You can have, maybe you're creative and make good use of your personal time. There's other factors that aren't trivial. But those four things are canonically important. You miss one of them and you're going to pay for it.
And so our society needs to rethink our relative valuation of career versus motherhood. So we don't know how to solve this problem but we could at least have an intelligent...

About Host:
Adam “Sos” Sosnick has lived a true rags to riches story. He hasn’t always been an authority on money. In fact, he was quite the opposite... Before hitting it big in finance in his thirties, he worked every job under the sun. He was a radio advertising salesman for Clear Channel, a party promoter, a hotel manager, a substitute teacher, a sports agent, and he even did standup comedy. While this life had a lot of perks, the reality was that he was making NO money.
In 2006, eager to start making serious money, Sos got an entry-level job at a financial firm as a cold-caller. After a few years of putting his nose to the grindstone and learning the ropes of the finance trade, Sos got promoted to VP of Sales and began to rack in serious money. Despite the financial world around him crumbling in the 2008 Great Recession and people going from making millions to losing their jobs overnight, Sos’s net worth skyrocketed. Seeing what was happening around him led him to recognize the SAVE THAT MONEY mantra.
Sos started a new project to wake young people up when it comes to money. He incorporated his high profile friends and influential financial connections to show that spending money is not that cool, and it’s all about #SaveThatMoney. And then what do you do with that money? You save to invest. Invest in appreciating assets, yourself, and helping people around you.

These sailors live in incredibly close quarters, with bunk beds stacked on top of each other and hardly any room to move around.
Despite being on a mission and busy enough to defend the country, the sailors will also need intimacy and privacy. But it is against Navy regulations for sailors to engage in intimate activity while on a deployed aircraft carrier. The tight living quarters and lack of privacy make it nearly impossible to maintain the level of professionalism required for the safety and success of the ship's mission.
That being said, it is not uncommon for sailors to form romantic relationships while on deployment. The stress and isolation of being at sea for months at a time can bring people closer together, and it is not uncommon for sailors to develop strong bonds with their shipmates.

The United States Department of Defense has announced plans to open 14,000 more military positions to women. Lieutenant Megan Donnelly is one of the 770 women on the aircraft carrier U.S.S.
Abraham Lincoln. LT. MEGAN DONNELLY: "Managing 15 - 20 people on the bridge at a time, and it's my job to manage all of them for the captain so that he doesn't have to -- he can focus on the big picture." Lieutenant Donnelly studied at the United States Naval Academy. She was trained as a Navy pilot. She has won a Navy award for her leadership. In fact, she was the first woman on her ship to earn the honor. Lieutenant Nicole Rosales is the ship's only female doctor. She likes the Navy. LT. NICOLE ROSALES: "Not only did they pay for my medical school, but they offered me the opportunity to serve on a aircraft carrier and to serve in various different hospitals throughout the United States." Many women serving on the Abraham Lincoln joined the Navy as a way to support their families. Amber Mentzer wants to save money during her four-year term of service and then leave the Navy, but not because she is unhappy. PETTY OFFICER AMBER MENTZER: "You come in with a positive attitude and do what you need to do, you'll be fine. So, I don't have a problem with the workloads or anything. Everybody gets treated pretty equally." Ingry Pimentel plans to stay in the Navy. SEAMAN APPRENTICE INGRY PIMENTEL: "I am gonna stay in the Navy -- makin' a career out of it. I've been in for about 8 months now. So, I plan a career out of it so far ... I like it." I'm Kelly Knuxoll.
